Domaine La Mutine

Domaine La Mutine was founded in 2022 by Jean-Paul Pando in the small village of Island, just outside Vézelay in the northern part of Burgundy.

Originally from Provence, Jean-Paul took an unconventional route into winemaking. After spending his early career in the restaurant industry, his growing passion for wine eventually led him into the vineyards. He gained experience in Provence before moving to Margaux, where he studied viticulture and oenology, and later to Meursault, where he worked at the renowned Domaine Jean-Marc Roulot, one of Burgundy's most respected producers of white wine. With this experience behind him, Jean-Paul decided to establish his own domaine in the lesser-known but fascinating terroirs of Vézelay.

Today, Domaine La Mutine consists of just under three hectares of organically farmed vineyards, planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Melon de Bourgogne across several small parcels. Jean-Paul's approach is deeply rooted in respect for nature and the individual character of each vineyard. Most of the work is carried out by hand, with careful attention to biodiversity, soil health and the natural balance of the vines. The grapes are harvested manually in small crates and carefully sorted directly in the vineyard.

In the cellar, the philosophy remains equally straightforward. Fermentations take place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, intervention is kept to an absolute minimum, and sulphur is used only in very small quantities. The wines are bottled without filtration, allowing the individual terroirs and vintages to express themselves as naturally as possible. For his Pinot Noir, Jean-Paul favours whole-cluster fermentation and gentle extraction, preserving freshness, elegance and the delicate character of the fruit.

The result is a collection of vibrant, precise and beautifully balanced wines that showcase a different side of Burgundy. Pure, energetic and full of character, Domaine La Mutine is a wonderful example of the exciting new generation of growers bringing fresh perspectives to the region while remaining deeply respectful of its traditions.
